Methodological overview

Composition of the sample

Monitoring is conducted in 4 cities (Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Kragujevac) on monthly bases (on pre-defined and monthly changing days of each month). One (monthly changing) store of all the five retailers are visited in all the four cities, so price is audited in 20 stores altogether per month.

Scope of audited categories and products

Categories to audit were selected according to the official average consumer basket defined by the Serbian Ministry of Internal and Foreign Trade. Altogether 73 categories are audited in each month (food and non-alcoholic drinks).

Definition of categories might change on monthly bases. In these categories the concrete product characteristics are rotated by month.

In all categories concrete product characteristics were defined based on their supply and availability at retailers:

  • the most common or most widely available type,
  • flavoring,
  • package,
  • filling weight.

Methodological considerations for monitoring prices

At each stores auditors check the price of all the available products, which meet the definitions of the given category. After that they record the price of the cheapest one (no matter if it is a traditional or private brand). This price will be the reference price of that category in that given store.

When defining the weight of the product to audit, we always mean net weight (the amount, that the costumer can consume).

Price promotions, which are available for all the customers, are taken into account, in that case the promoted price is taken into account when selecting the cheapest product.

Price promotion of loyalty cards are not taken into account when selecting the cheapest product (as not all the customers own it).

Methodology of calculating the basket price

Price of the basket is calculated by retailers based on the official average consumer basket defined by Serbian Ministry of Internal and Foreign Trade (for household size of 3 people).

If a category was not available at any of the stores, the entire category is left from the calculation and in next month it will be replaced with a similar category.
